Title | Wilson, Robert: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to astrophysics, both solar and stellar. He combines remarkable experimental and instrumental design ability with a deep understanding of the physical principles involved. He has used the Zeta plasma source to obtain spectra in the ultraviolet which have led to identification of new lines in the solar spectrum. His experiments in the sun-stabilised Skylark rocket have provided the first observations of the coronal spectrum of the sun in the vacuum ultraviolet and he has continued to play a leading part in ultraviolet astronomy, particularly in the design of orbiting astronomical observatory satellites as well as stabilized rocket vehicles. |
