TitleChaloner, William Gilbert: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1973
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his palaeobotanical researches. A series of descriptive papers dealing with lycopods has revealed significant relationships between the findings of botany and palynology. His studies of Palaeozoic lycopod cones from Britain and America have added to knowledge of their morphology and taxonomy and to his recognition of precise botanical sources for some of the spores already known to be dispersed in coals and in use as stratigraphical indicators. From skilful evaluation of plant remains in borehole cores, has improved the identification and correlation of concealed Mesozoic and Palaeozoic rocks in south-east England. Consideration of the late Palaeozoic plant distribution on a world basis has contributed to the understanding of continental drift, and of Devonian spores to the derivation heterospory and the seed habit.
