TitleElliott, Sir Roger James: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1975
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationHe has made important contributions to many aspects of the theory of the solid state. His early work was concerned with the magnetic properties of rare earth salts and was later extended to give the first comprehensive account of magnetism in the rare earth metals. In electron band theory he was the first to demonstrate the importance of spin-orbit coupling in interpreting the properties of semiconductors. A special feature of his work has been a close interaction with experimental physics - in particular his theory has been used to verify the reality of excitons and of the localised vibrations near defects, and of various effects observed by neutron diffraction. Most recently he has made contributions to the theory of phase transitions and the theory of disordered solids. The full range of his interests is shown by his list of over 100 publications. Awarded Maxwell Medal, Institute of Physics 1968.
