TitleGray, Edward George: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1975
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his studies of synaptic structure. He first showed the two main types of contact between neurons, now widely believed to be excitatory and inhibitory. He has made fundamental studies of the nervous systems of several species, including insects, leeches, octopuses, birds and mammals. He made the first electronmicroscopic study of the cerebellum and of dendritic spines and serial synapses. He has pioneered the detailed analysis of synaptic structural proteins by stereo-electronmicroscopy, showing how fixation procedures make an artefactual framework. By stabilising microtubules with albumen he has shown them covered with synaptic membrane.
