CitationHis ingenuity and imagination have enabled him to attack in novel ways problems of great difficulty and scientific importance. He has contributed to the analysis of random processes in physical situations where the simple Markovian assumptions do not apply, such as percolation in lattices, and self-avoiding random walks. He has been a pioneer in the systematic development of Monte Carlo techniques. Though always motivated by physical problems, many of his discoveries have independent mathematical interest, usually to combinatorial theory, and he is a leading contributor to the theory of subadditive functions. He was one of the first forcefully and successfully to advocate constructive steps to revitalize the teaching of mathematics in schools.
