Title | Horlock, Sir John Harold: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1969 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Horlock has made numerous important contributions to the understanding of phenomena in power plants, particularly turbo-machines. In 1952 he showed experimentally that the three-dimensional flows in axial compressors were better described by the actuator disc theory than the then current "radial equilibrium" theory. Other problems in the fluid mechanics of turbo-machinery which he has studied since include the potential flow in cascades, the growth of blade and annulus wall boundary layers, the effects of Reynolds number, blade thickness and unsteady and secondary flows. He has evolved several useful design methods notably for the diffusers of centrifugal compressors, and for axial compressors and turbines in unsteady flow. His two books on axial flow compressors and turbines are widely used by designers and research workers. He has successfully designed several turbines and an advanced transonic compressor. His work also contains contributions to problems of fundamental interest in three dimensional boundary layers, diabatic and magneto hydrodynamic flows, heat transfer and gas dynamics. |
