He has made significant contributions to the understanding of the mechanisms of organic reactions. In particular his applications of electron spin resonance to the study of reactions have verified the existence, established the structures and greatly extended our knowledge of reactions or organic free radicals. He has also contributed to the quantitative interpretation of aromatic substitution, to studies of oxidation by lead tetra-acetate and to the chemistry of nitrogen compounds.
