TitlePease, Rendel Sebastian: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1976
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDr. Pease has made important contributions in two main fields, Solid State Physics and High Temperature Plasma Physics. From 1947 he worked on radiation damage, particularly atomic displacements, (Kinchin-Pease Model, replacement collisions). He was also involved in the discovery of saturation main displacement damage, in the theory of sputtering. Simultaneously, he worked on neutron diffraction and established the Fourier synthesis neutron diffraction technique and made measurements of atomic movements (especially hydrogen) in ferroelectric KH-2PO-4. Since 1955 he has made significant contributions to high temperature plasma-physics (Pease-Braginskii current) and in establishing the main phenomena in slow toroidal discharges. His outstanding abilities gradually drew him into an involvement with the entire plasma fusion field and since 1967 he has been Director of the Culham Laboratory and has made major scientific contributions to almost all its work. More than anyone else in the western world he has established the potential of magnetic confinement as a basis of a civil thermonuclear reactor.
