TitleSmith, John Maynard: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1976
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his experimental work on Drosophila subobscura and for his contributions to evolutionary theory. His work with Drosophila was concerned with the genetic control of various aspects of fitness which led him on to an investigation of the ageing process of insects. After a gap in his output after his move to Sussex, where as Dean he has built up an influential school of biology, he has made a series of most important contributions at the boundaries of genetics and ecology, with special emphasis on the development of adequate mathematical models. He has dealt with predator-prey relationships, with the development of evolutionary stable strategies of conflict, with kin selection and with the evolution of sex and of recombination.
He has written an excellent short textbook on evolution.
