CitationDistinguished for his work on the chemistry and biogenesis of various fungal and plant metabolic products, but more particularly for his work on the chemistry and biogenesis of a group of plant hormones - the gibberellins in plant tissues have, in his hands and in those of other workers using his techniques. Led to an increasingly detailed knowledge of the occurrence and distribution of gibberellins in plants, of their routes of biosynthesis and of metabolic conversions of one gibberellin to others. As a result of his work and the work he has inspired our knowledge of the role of gibberellins in the control of plant development has greatly increased.
