| Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to pure and applied chemistry both as an individual research worker and in management at increasingly responsible levels. His pioneer interest in the speculative development of fluorine chemistry and its application in biochemical fields, amongst them narcosis, turned his attention to anaesthesia. After discussions on practical requirements with anaesthesiologists, and in collaboration with pharmacologists Hames Raventos, he applied his theoretical ideas to the design and synthesis of 'Fluothane' (halothane B.P.), now the most widely used anaesthetic un the world, approaching its billionth application. Additionally, he developed the manufacturing process. Later at management level, he became deeply involved in working out the difficult and complex processes for the dipyridyl weedkillers, and also in the ultimate design and erection of a unique plant, possibly the first in the world operated by an on-line computer. His career has provided an outstanding example of practical benefit derived from the application of fundamental science. Suckling advises I.C.I. main board on aspects of toxicology, especially carcinogenicity and pollution control, and is a Visiting Professor at the University of Stirling. |
