| Citation | Formerly Professor of Bacteriology as Applied to Hygiene, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (1930 - 1947) and Director of the Public Health Laboratory Service of England and Wales (1941 - 1963). Buchanan Medallist, 1967. Distinguished for his many contributions to microbiology and the prevention of infectious diseases. His microbiological subjects include Salmonella bacilli and the experimental epidemiology of salmonellosis; Brucella organisms, particularly their classification and serology, and the establishment of the prevalence of brucellosis in the United Kingdom; the tubercle bacillus; and the experimental evaluation of B.C.G. vaccination against tuberculosis. He made major contributions to the bacteriological examination of water supplies and to the bacteriological grading of milk; and wrote a classical monograph on the pasteurisation of milk. He was instrumental with W.W.C Topley in founding the Public Health Laboratory Service. While Director he contributed to studies of staphylococcal and other microbial food poisoning; of combined active and passive immunization against diphtheria; of human non-pulmonary tuberculosis of bovine origin; and of the provocation of poliomyelitis by various forms of prophylactic inoculation against other diseases. Publications include six editions of the advanced text, Topley and Wilson's Principles of Bacteriology and Immunity and monographs on the pasteurisation of milk, use of disinfectants in hospitals and the hazards of immunization. |
