TitleCowley, John Maxwell: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1976
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his pioneering researches in electron microscopy and diffraction of crystals. In the 1950's he established in Australia a school for the study of crystal structure by electron diffraction. Together with Moodie he formulated a treatment of many beam electron diffraction theory, which is particularly suited to crystal structure analysis, introduced the "phase-grating" approximation, developed Fourier image theory, established a simple relation between slightly defocused electron microscope images and charge density projections, and demonstrated convincingly, by combining theory with experiment, the application of electron microscopy in structure analysis on a scale compatible with the instrumental resolution. He made important contributions to our understanding of inelastic and disorder scattering and he demonstrated the reciprocity between scanning and transmission microscopy contrast. His early work on ordering in alloys represented a significant advance.
