TitleCrossland, Sir Bernard: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1976
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationCrossland's work in high pressure engineering followed the pioneering work of Bridgman and Morrison and he was the first to get accurate data on the effect of high hydrostatic pressure on yield and plastic flow of metals. His work on high pressure fatigue properties broke new ground. He made important contributions to the understanding of the failure of thick walled pressure vessels and studied the mechanical properties of tungsten carbide at pressures of up to 20 Gpa at up to 800 degrees Celsius. This involved severe problems in the design and development of testing equipment, as did his work in the field of high velocity jet cutting of materials and explosive welding of dissimilar materials. In the latter field, he has carried out both fundamental studies and applied research which has been recorded in several published papers. His group has been the only one to have fully described the process for the cladding of large steel plates, which is being applied commercially. Crossland has extended this work into the field of explosive plugging of heat exchanger tubes, particularly for nuclear reactors, and has solved a major practical problem for both the AGR and PFR systems.
