Title | Daniels, Henry Ellis: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Date | 1979 |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for contributions to the theory of statistical inference and to the theory of probability (especially stochastic processes), he has done important work on rank correlation, on the asymptotic efficiency of maximum likelihood estimates, and on the use of the saddle-point method in statistics. He is responsible for important advances in connexion with the estimation of spectral densities, with the first-passage problem for the Poisson process with a curved boundary, and with random walks with directionally dependent steps. He is also well known for his contributions to textile technology, and to the theory of position finding. Recently he has made important contributions to the theory of epidemic spread, and his work on bundles of threads (originally undertaken in the textile context) has found important applications to the development of high strength fibre composites. |
