TitleFriedlander, Frederick Gerard: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1977
DescriptionCitation typed. Photocopy of citation, with handwritten annotations, attached
CitationDr. Friedlander has made many significant contributions to the theory of the wave equations in general. His early work was largely concerned with the technically important subject of sharp-fronted solutions of the wave equation, particularly with their reflection and diffraction and with their relation to geometrical optics. His authoritative monograph 'Sound Pulses' (1958) remains a standard exposition. Later work, on a variety of subjects, included notable elucidations of the difficult problems concerning diffraction by smoothly curved obstacles. In recent years he has contributed valuably to the study of mathematical problems, such as radiation fields, relating to gravitational radiation and general relativity. His recently published book 'The Wave Equation on a Curved Space-Time' (1976) has already received much critical acclaim. His work as a whole is distinguished by profound scholarship, mathematical precision of the highest order and great style: its international repute has long been secure.
