TitleJarrett, William Fleming Hoggan: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1978
DescriptionCitation typed. Curriculum vitae attached
CitationJarrett's major contributions lie in several fields, all veterinary but having implications for medicine, notably: (a) The development, by an ingenious method, of the first field vaccine against a helminth disease, bovine parasitic bronchitis, a very dangerous condition. The immunological and other basic mechanisms having been elucidated, study continues of their application in other helminth infections, while work on the expulsion of helminths from the alimentary tract has revealed other fundamental immunological and pathogenic processes. (b) Studies on Theileria parva, a destructive parasite of cattle in Africa, where a sophisticated investigation of life-cycle and immunology, including the use of mathematical models, were a contribution towards the first vaccine, now on field trial, against a protozoal parasite. (c) Work on feline leukaemia, with the demonstration that this is virus-induced and that the agent is also responsible for other diseases. This first demonstration of spontaneous virus-induced leukaemia in a mammal was followed by detailed immunological work which led to recognition that the disease was spread by horizontal transmission and its incidence in the field controlled by a humoral antibody immunological surveillance mechanism directed against a cell surface antigen. Again, a vaccine is being tested for field use. There are wide implications for studies on leukaemia of man and animals. Investigation of similar conditions in other animals has led to a classification of animal lymphoid neoplasms now adopted by WHO. (d) The close relationship between virus-induced papilloma in cattle, frequently progressing to malignancy, and a food element (bracken) is under active study and substantial findings have been made. This is linked to parallel work by others on alimentary cancers in man in the same area, a new field having been opened by this discovery of co-carcinogenesis, under natural conditions, involving viral and environmental chemical agents.
