TitleLiggins, Sir Graham Collingwood: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1977
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his studies of the hormonal control of parturition in man and animals, his experimental demonstration that hypophysectomy or pituitary stalk section of the sheep fetus will prevent the onset of parturition, whereas fetal injections of ACTH or glucocorticoids will precipitate premature labour, has been one of the most significant advances in our understanding of the mechanism of parturition. His discovery that fetal glucocorticoids also control the synthesis of surfactant by the fetal lung has important implications for the prevention of the respiratory distress syndrome in newborn children.
