TitleRichmond, Sir Mark Henry: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1976
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to the understanding of gene replication, expression, and evolution in bacteria. His early research concerned the action of antibiotics and metabolite analogues at the molecular level and he showed that chemical reaction between drug and receptor is as important as structural analogy in the development of effective inhibitors in vivo.
His most important work has centered on the molecular biology of plasmids and their role in the development and maintenance of bacterial resistance to antibiotics. Together with Richard Novick he was responsible for recognition and characterisation of the penicillinase-producing plasmids of penicillin resistant varieties of Staph. Aureus, and was the first to work out their compatibility relationships for co-existence in the same cell and the molecular mechanisms controlling formation of their penicillinases. He has latterly applied a uniquely developed combined molecular and epidemiological approach to the study of transmissible R-plasmids responsible for many types of antibiotic resistance in entero-bacteria, producing for the first time convincing evidence of spontaneous transfer between wild-type E.coli and Pseudomonas species in a natural environment in studies of their incidence, mutual interactions and probable mechanisms of spread amongst intestinal flora in human and animal populations. He was awarded the Robert Koch prize (for contributions to microbiology) in 1976.
