TitleBrown, Lawrence Michael: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1980
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his studies of the mechanisms of plasticity, creep, fatigue and ductile fracture; he has injected new ideals into all four fields. Distinguished also for pioneering work on the quantitative applications of electron microscopy to the measurement of strain fields at precipitates and dislocations, and the study of energetics and growth kinetics of damage clusters in irradiated materials. He has recently played a leading role in the development of high resolution scanning microscopy. His work is characterised by exceptional physical insight and breadth. It has influenced thinking wherever the atomistic mechanisms of deformation are studied.
