TitleHewitt, Eric John: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1981
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished internationally for his researches on the role of trace elements in the nutrition and metabolism of plants. Initially, emphasis was placed on the description of the morphological and physiological consequences of specific deficiencies of trace elements, and his experiments on the 'whiptail' condition of cauliflowers deprived of molybdenum has become a classical example of a deficiency syndrome. An important aspect of such studies has been the development in Hewitt's laboratories of plant culture techniques sufficiently precise to demonstrate deficiencies, and his resulting book 'Sand and Water Culture Methods used in the Study of Plant Nutrition' provides excellent guidance to soil scientists and plant physiologists. In later work, Hewitt has sought a fuller understanding of the role of trace elements in nitrogen assimilation mechanisms in plants, and his studies with nitrate and nitrate reductases are among the most penetrating mechanistic investigations of plant enzymes.
