First to demonstrate antibody production by single cells, thus helping establish clonal selection. Pioneer of antigen localization techniques, discovered follicular dendritic cell. Numerous contributions to understanding of immunological tolerance, including joint discovery of ultra-low-zone tolerance and clonal abortion of B cells; by clonal analysis is measuring contribution of suppression and clonal inactivation.
In his laboratory T and B cells were first clearly distinguished (in chickens), and many advances have been made in techniques for separating and handling immunologically active cells.
