TitleDay, Peter: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1981
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his wide range of studies in inorganic chemistry and the physico-chemical properties of solids. Day has played a major role in the development of mixed valency chemistry, and has carried out important and elegant experimental and theoretical work on the spectra, magnetic properties and conductivity of solid, inorganic complexes. As a young researcher he gave the first theoretically consistent description of the visible-ultra-violet spectra of vitamin B12 and its derivatives. Later he put the assignment of inorganic charge transfer spectra on a more rigorous experimental and theoretical basis; he correlated the structures and physical properties of single and mixed valency metal chain compounds; he identified and investigated the first set of ferromagnetic compounds with highly resolved visible spectra by a combination of optical and neutron scattering methods. He also systematised the spectra of metamagnets and used optical methods to determine magnetic phase diagrams. Corday-Morgan Medal and Prize of the Chemical Society, 1971.
