TitleMoffatt, Henry Keith: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1979
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to several areas of fluid mechanics, in particular magnetohydrodynamics, turbulence, and viscous flow systems. He has investigated theoretically many aspects of the interaction of a magnetic field with turbulent flow of an electrically conducting fluid, and has done much to elucidate the conditions under which amplification of the magnetic field will occur. He has clarified many interesting problems in magnetohydrodynamics, especially dynamo action in a variety of circumstances, and has studied a number of intriguing viscous flow fields, beginning with 'Moffatt eddies' in a wedge-shaped region. His research is characterized by keen physical insight, an appreciation of what is practical, simple but effective analysis, and beautifully clear exposition.
