TitleDowson, Duncan: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1981
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationProfessor Dowson has made substantial contributions in the area of elastohydrodynamic lubrication, which has more recently received extensive attention. The formulation of elastohydrodynamic lubrication theory has provided a new and important understanding of highly stressed machine elements, such as in gearing and roller bearings. It has also provided a better insight into the tribological factors governing the operation of seals, cams, the motion of tyres on wet roads, highly loaded journal bearings and the lubrication of load bearing human joints, plus an understanding of the tribological interaction of important machine components which was not available 15-20 years ago.
Professor Dowson has made a major contribution to the tribological problems of internal medical prothesis for hips, knees and shoulders.
