TitleFozard, John William: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1984
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationFrom 1963 to 1978, as Chief Designer, Harrier, Dr Fozard led the team which developed this unique British aircraft in its various forms including two-seater and RN Sea Harrier. The fact that today, over 20 years later, it remains the world's only operational jet V/STOL fighter testifies to the excellence of the design and the soundness of its engineering solutions in the fields of aerodynamics, performance, flying qualities, structure and systems. From 1973 he led to practical reality the development of the early ideas for Ski-Jump launch - a technique of notable elegance and great significance to the safety and performance of Harriers flying from ships. After six years in technical marketing during which he was responsible for over £350M of aerospace exports, he returned to technological activities as Divisional Director in charge of special projects at Weybridge. One of his major tasks is the development of SkyHook a Harrier launch and recovery system for small ships in rough seas.
