CitationDistinguished for his work on various aspects of theoretical solid state physics, and particularly for his work on light scattering. His 1964 paper on the Raman effect was one of the hundred most cited papers in all areas of physical science between 1960 and 1969. He has published more than 70 papers and two books, one of which on the Quantum Theory of Light has a very high international reputation and has been translated into Russian and Japanese. His early work on excitons and magnons and his most recent work on surface excitations has also proved to be important. He has played a full role at the University of Essex as professor, chairman and dean. He has also worked at RRE, Bell Telephone Laboratories, and RCA and has been a consultant to these three organisations over several years, contributing to applied as well as fundamental research.
