Citation | Paul Erdos is the most widely known mathematician in the world today. He has, over the past 55 years, made a very great number of significant contributions to quite diverse mathematical disciplines: theory of numbers, combinatorics, transversal theory, geometry, analysis, the application of probability theory to the theory of numbers. Nobody knows how many papers he has published, a rough guess is 900, many of them with collaborators whom he has inspired. He has become an elder statesman in mathematics, using his great stature and influence to foster the talents of brilliant young mathematicians - but without slackening the pace of his own research. |
