TitleBaldwin, John Evan: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1988
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationBaldwin is distinguished for outstanding contributions to radioastronomy. He devised novel techniques for high-resolution imaging and used them to open new avenues of research. He was the first to apply cross-correlation spectroscopy to synthetic aperture arrays and his Half Mile Telescope (1968) provided sub-arcminute resolution and Doppler shifts in the 21 cm H-line for the first detailed studies of the disks of nearby galaxies. Later he overcame the severe problems of aperture synthesis-imaging through the irregular ionosphere at long wavelengths and his 6C Telescope (1975) and Low Frequency Telescope (1981) provided the deepest surveys yet made for studies of the evolution of radio galaxies at large redshifts. Having recently demonstrated the feasibility of a similar technique at optical wavelengths, which offers the prospect of a thousandfold increase in optical resolution, he is currently exploiting this breakthrough by the construction of the Optical Aperture Synthesis Telescope (COAST) the aim of which is to provide resolved images of stellar surfaces and active galactic nuclei
