TitleDalton, Howard: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1988
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his work on the physiology of nitrogen-fixing, methylotrophic and hydrocarbon-utilising microorganisms and the enzymology of certain of their key enzymes. Dalton's group has been responsible for the first purification of a soluble multicomponent enzyme system which catalyses the oxidation of methane to methanol. His detailed physicochemical, kinetic and genetic studies have delineated the structure/function relationships of the three protein components of the enzyme, together with an assembly protein, and shown their relationship to another membrane-associated form of the enzyme. His studies on the remarkably broad substrate specificity of this and other hydrocarbon oxygenases, together with studies of whole cell physiology have made major contributions to our understanding of the phenomena of co-metabolism and fortuitous metabolism and their technological applications in the chemical industry.
