TitleLamb, Trevor David: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1990
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationHe has used his great experimental skills to investigate vertebrate photoreception. He analysed the lateral spread of excitation between photoreceptors and its longitudinal spread in single outer segments. He showed that rods respond to single quanta, that calcium is not the internal transmitter but is the agent regulating sensitivity during adaptation, that hydrolysis of GTP is a necessary step in the termination of the light response, and that bleached pigment makes receptors noisy. He has also contributed to the methods used in this field (noise analysis, the suction pipette technique, and ways of controlling intracellular calcium). His many distinguished colleagues in this work greatly respect his practical skill in devising the right instrumentation, and his ability to see the significance of the results for the visual process as a whole.
