TitleNeuberger, Michael Samuel: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1990
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his pioneering contributions in the areas of immunoglobulin gene expression and of antibody engineering. Contemporarily with others, he discovered immunoglobulin gene enhancers, the first cellular enhancer element to be identified. More recently, he discovered additional enhancers, probably more important than the former in transcription regulation. He was first to demonstrate that tissue-specificity was also regulated at the level of the V-gene promoters, implicating an octanucleotide motif. He is also among the main contributors in defining the increasingly important post-translational controlling events.
He was the first to produce recombinant antibodies possessing novel effector functions, and (contemporarily with others) initiated the field of "humanisation" of mouse antibodies. He has now shown the feasibility of deriving transgenic animals capable of producing wholly human antibodies.
