TitleBrockes, Jeremy Patrick: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date21/05/1993
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his work in neurobiology and amphibian limb regeneration. He developed the standard method for purifying Schwann cells, which made it possible for him to identify and purify a novel glial growth factor (GGF). In a series of elegant studies on amphibian limb regeneration, he showed that (1) GGF contributes to the nerve-dependence of amphibian lilmb regeneration, (2) the nerve supply controls the character of the progenitor cells involved in limb regeneration, (3) the mesenchymal progenitor cells involved in limb regeneration are distinct from those involved in limb development, (4) multinucleate muscle fibres dedifferentiate during limb regeneration to give rise to mononuclear progenitor cells of the blastema, and (5) the regenerating limb expresses a novel retinoic acid receptor and a regeneration-specific homeobox gene.
