CitationDavid Miller is distinguished for his discovery of giant optical nonlinearity in narrow gap semiconductors. These effects in refraction and absorption were larger by more than three orders of magnitude than conventional wisdom expected.
The discoveries led to demonstration of optically bistable switches and an optical transistor with gain. This seminal work contributed towards research in optical information processing. He followed this by inventing the Self Electro-optic Effect Device (SEED) based on the quantum-confined Stark effect. This device has been the backbone of AT&T Bell research on photonic switching since that time. His work has produced an outstanding level of citation.
