TitleEdwards, Peter Philip: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1992
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to condensed matter science in areas ranging from alkali metal anions, metal solutions and small metallic particles through to high temperature superconductivity, with a common theme being Metal-Nonmetal Transitions. His outstanding experimental work on the magnetic properties of alkali metal solutions - systems which require enormous manipulative skill - plus his elegant and extensive theoretical analysis of the Metal-Nonmetal Transition, show him to be in the forefront of young modern researchers. He also pioneered the development and application of fresh synthetic techniques and experiments to probe the size-dependent electronic structure in small metallic particles and clusters. In his further work on superconductivity in metallic oxides (initiated in 1978, prior to the world wide interest in this area) he first identified the fundamental link between high temperature superconductivity and the Metal-Nonmetal Transition. His recent work, on the corresponding Metal-Superconductivity-Nonmetal Transition in thallium cuprates, has led to an unprecedented degree of chemical control of superconductivity and to the report (1991) of the highest superconducting transition temperature yet recorded.
