TitleWhitelaw, James Hunter: certificate of election to the Royal Society
Date1994
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for the major contributions which he has made to experimental fluid mechanics, heat transfer and combustion. These include the development of novel techniques and their application to the improvement of physical knowledge of simple and complex flows. Under his direction laser and phase-Doppler velocimetry and other optical techniques have been converted from concepts to useful methods and have contributed to better understanding of single and two-phase flows, often with complications of separation and combustion and with configurations ranging from simple to those of engineering hardware. Specific examples include the flow within internal engines and the combustors of gas turbine engines where quantitative information of the nature of the flows has been provided where none previously existed.
