CitationSchluter is distinguished for his contributions to evolutionary biology. He developed the analytical tools for measuring natural selection surfaces. His field studies showed that species occupy peaks on selection surfaces corresponding to features of environment, and that resource competition promotes peak shifts in adaptive radiation. He demonstrated that speciation in nature was caused by divergent natural selection. His analyses confirmed that adaptive divergence is biased in the direction of maximum genetic variance within populations. He developed a likelihood method that pouts probabilistic bounds on prehistoric character transitions on phylogenetic trees. He developed the standard method for quantifying degree of convergence and matching between independent faunas on different continents.
