TitleDolphin, David Henry: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationDistinguished for his contributions to the chemistry and biochemistry of tetrapyrrolic macrocycles, particularly porphyrins and vitamin B12. Dolphin's early work showed that reversible oxidation of the porphyrin ring, to generate p?cation radicals, was important in the early steps of photosyntheses and in generating the high oxidation states of haem proteins such as catalases and peroxidases. Indeed, his characterization of the Fe(IV) porphyrin+ and its extension to the oxoferryl species laid the groundwork for our understanding of the functions of all haem proteins activated by endogenous or exogenous 'peroxide' including the cytochromes P?450. His interest in the fundamental chemistry of porphyrins led to discovery of the "diene?like" properties of vinylporphyrins which can undergo Diels Alder reactions with dienophiles, and identified the reaction products as unique anti?cancer drugs for use in photodynamic therapy. His drug is in human clinical trials and is effective against cancer and other proliferate diseases and he has been the pivotal influence in the world?wide development of this new therapeutic modality.
