TitleHawkesworth, Christopher John: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationProfessor Hawkesworth is distinguished for his important contributions to isotope geochemistry - he is a leader in this field. Over the last 20 years, he has achieved prominence in several areas through the application of isotope and geochemical techniques. More than anyone else, he has, through systematic studies of arc volcanics, understood the mass balance of element transfer in subduction zones. Again, through detailed and systematic studies of continental volcanics and mantle xenoliths, Hawkesworth has documented the chemical state and evolution of the continental lithosphere mantle. His ability to link magmatic processes with tectonics has been an exceptional feature of his research. In recent years, his interests have broadened further to include investigations of chronology relating to archaeology and hominid evolution as well as to studies of the palaeoenvironment.
