| Description | Cartoon in which Banks is pursuing a butterfly with two nets while trampling on someone lying on the floor. "It appeared in “Peter Pindar” [John Wolcot] Sir Joseph Banks and the Emperor of Morocco. A Tale. By Peter Pindar, Esquire. Royal Society tracts X420/19. Said to have had four editions in 1788, London, G. Kearsley. The third and fourth editions seem to have this plate and it also appears in various of Peter Pindar’s collected works. Not known who drew and engraved it. It is part of a well known attack on Banks by the vicious satirist John Wolcot, which mocks him as President of the Royal Society, and his collecting – the Emperor of Morocco is a fictitious butterfly. |
