An absent Member of the Society, who desired not to be named, presented them, by the Secretary, with a Book, concerning the usefulnesse of Experimental Philosophy ; for which thanks were Ordered to the Author, and the Booke committed to Dr Goddards custody.
Mosr. Hugenius presented the Company from his Father with a written Account, concerning the Varieties of Earths, found in a Waterpit boared at Amsterdam Anno 1605. The Secretary was ordered, to returne the Thanks of the Company to Monsr. de Zulichem, and to desire of him a Scheme of the Boaring Engine ; and also to cause the said Account to be entered. Dr Power produced several Microscopical Observations, made by himselfe ; for which he received thanks and himselfe, Dr Wiles, Dr Wren and Mr Hook were appointed to joyne together, for more Observations of the like nature.
The Pot of the Viper-powder, kept by Mr Pelleyn was opened ; but nothing alive was found in it. Mr Hook was desired to look upon some of the powder through a Microscope ; Mr Pell relating, that Sir Charles Cavendish had kept a Box of Viper-powder, which being opened and found Extreamly Stinking, had store of little moving Creatures in it, like Mies of Cheese.
Sir Robert Moray, Dr Wilkins and Dr Goddard appointed to try the producing of Maggots with old Cheese and Sack.
Dr Power related, to have observed, tht the little Fishes swimming in Vinegar, did disappear in the Vinegar when frozen, but frisked again upon the returne of the frozen vinegar to its Liquidity.
Dr Goddard and Mr Pell gave an Account of their thoughts about the erecting of the long glasse tubes for the Torricellian Experiment with Water. Ordered that two or them should be erected accordingly against next day ; and that Mr Boyle's Engin should be applyed to it, to see, whether theWater can be raised higher by Suction.
Dr Croon was desired to bring in writing the Relation he made, of the second tryal of feeding a Carp in the Air.
Captain Taylor related, that he knew, a Carpe to haue been fed out of the water for a twelve-month, with bread moistened in Milke, feding it in some damp place, twice a day, and swinging it ofter for refrigeration he advised to take those Carpes for the Experiment, that will feed, and have been accustomed to it in Ponds.
Colonel Long was desired to make this Experiment in the Countrey upon such Carpes.
Mr Graunt mentioned, that he knew a Fishmonger who did put Anno 1650 three Carpes into a Pond, which at the end of four yers were multiplyed into 675 whereof the smallest were 15 or 16 inches long ; He was desired to bring the Story with all the circumstances therof in writing.
Colonel Long relating several Observables concerning the Spawning, generation, and growing of Fishes, both of those that are carnivorous, and those that feede on weeds : and particularly of Salmons, Pikes, Trouts, Carpes, Eeles : he was desired to communicate these Observations of his and whatever else he knoweth of Fishes, in writing : And in particular, whether carnivorous fishes grow sooner bigger, than others ; How long the male-Salmons are dmit-ted, before the femle oned do Spawn, and what time of the year and how often? Item, of the Male - Salmon, taking care of and defending the Spawne cast by the female in a hole. Item, what he hath observed in other fishes concerning these circumstances.
He was also desired to adde hereunto, his Observations of Toads and Frogs, and their Spawning ; and in particular of Toads coupling on Land unfruitfully ; and of the raining of Frogs etc. Item, of the Spawning of Neutes and Lizzards, and to shew some of the Later to the Company. Item the Story of the Winged Serpent flying to a Tree, the wings whereof, he said, did resemble those of a Batt.
Mr Graunt related to have been assured, that Salmons of 6 or 8 inches long, were growne 4 foot in length, in two yeares time, He was desired to get the Story hereof with all the particulars in writing.
And all those, that had the oppertuny, were desired to make several Experiments in Several Fishes, concerning their growth.
Mr Packer mentioned tht he had seen Land-Neuts to haue 14 eggs, which being opened, had young once in them that ran away.
Dr Wilkins related to have kept froggs for a twelvemonth in a Tubbe drawn ouer with wires, and that he could never see them feed upon any thing, though he often threw wormes into the Vessel, they were in : But that he had observed them change their Colour in winter, and turne blackish, but in due season recover their natural one. = It being queried, whether Spratts have Spawn, Mr Henshaw affirmed to haue seen some, that had.
It being also queried, whether Sprats were young herrings, My Lord Crawford-Lindsay, and Colonel Long affirmed, they were a peculiar Sort of Fish, and taken in many places where Herrings were not. '
