The Reverend Mr Patrick Murdock Rector of Stradishall in Suffolk, was propounded for a Candidate; and a Certificate in his favour signed, Henry Stuart Stephens, Martin Folkes, George Lewis Scott, datd London December 12 : being read, was ordered to be put up according to the Statutes.
Signor Giovanni Giacomo Marinoni of Udine, his Imperial Majesties Mathematician and Professor of Astronomy at Vienna was also propounded for a Candidate, and his Certificate signed Martin Folkes; Cromwell Mortimer, John Machin; dated London December 12 being read was ordered to be put up according to the Statutes.
Another part of Doctor Mortimer's Discourse on the Disease among the Cows was read; and the rest referred to another Meeting.
For which thanks were ordered.
Edward Montague Esq was put to the Ballot and elected Fellow.
Mr Anderson was put to the Ballot and elected Fellow.
Mr Baker communicated an Extract of a Letter he received from Mr Anderson, giving an account of what he calls, the Weavers Larum, being a contrivance consisting of cheap and simple apparatus made use of chiefly by the Weavers at Norwich when they have occasion to rise at a certain hour early in the morning [alarm clock]. They measure the time by the burning of a Candle, which standing on a Shelf with a graduated board against the Wall, shews how much it will wast in any given time ; Then having a Pack thread strained by a Weight over a Pully, and appliled to the wide of the Candle, agaist that part which shews the hour ; as soon as the Candle burns down to the place, it burns the Packthread, which breaking lets fall the weight upon the sounding Board, and gives the Larum to the person who is to be waked by it; or by means of another Packthread twisted round the Thumb, and communicating with that which holds the weight, as soon as the Line breaks, the fall of the Weight gives a Pull, and wakes the Person.
