Inscribed; 'This axis was cast at Carron. Warren mill was set to work 5 May 1785. Note, 22 December 1786 this iron axis broke, it was afterwards replaced by a wooden axis. See Mr Walton's letter to Mr Smeaton 7 January 1787. Also Mr Smeaton's answer.'
