The blowing machine, No. 4 had been constructed when that furnace was first built in 1766. It was set to work about the end of that year. It was made under the direction of Mr George Mathews who had Mr Smeaton's plans (see folios 67-70) 1764 for guidance but did not follow them (either for machine No. 3 which he made in 1766 with two large cylinders, nor) for this No. 4 which had three cylinders, (See tables, folio 74) 60 and one eigth inch, and 59 and seven eigths inches diameter piston, 6 foot stroke, water wheel 27 foot diameter; Mr Smeaton in his report of 11th February 1769 (Printed Reports I, 360) recommended the fourth cylinder to be added and this collar of leathers to be applied to all the four, a new crank with four necks at right angles, nevertheless the table, 15th July 1776 shes that No. 4 had then only three cylinders. |
