Inscribed in the hand of John Farey; In a report 1791 Mr. Smeaton mentioned that in 1748 one of the piers settled so as to oblige two of the arches to be taken down after the bridge had been opened to the public. This relates to the memorial by Mr. Smeaton to the Commissioners for Westminster Bridge in 1748. See Printed Reports, III, 82

Inscribed in the hand of John Farey; This paper is mentioned by Mr. Smeaton in his Short account of inventions 1756, Art 5th thereof. This plan (which is there more fully explained) was not accepted. It was tried in 1753 at the building of Wakefield Mill. This is one of the earliest of Mr. Smeaton's papers.
