Inscribed in the hand of John Farey; In a report 1791 Mr. Smeaton mentioned that in 1748 one of the piers settled so as to oblige two of the arches to be taken down after the bridge had been opened to the public. This relates to the memorial by Mr. Smeaton to the Commissioners for Westminster Bridge in 1748. See Printed Reports, III, 82
