DescriptionPortrait medal. Hirn died January 14 1890, just before the issue of this medal. Obverse: bust of Hirn, right profile, hair long, in coat, collar, and cravat. Reverse: Science, seated, right profile, watches the flames of a fire burning upon an antique and raised altar, symbolic of thermodynamics. Her hair, with bandeau, gathered into a knot behind; she is clad in loose drapery, which leaves the arms bare; in left hand a scroll. At her feet an oak garland and a portfolio, whilst a balance recalls the appplications of M.Hirn's researches on vapour. Behind her rise branches of laurel, among which the inscription SCIENTIA, on a band. In the distance the profile of the mountains of Logelbach with the ruins of the "Trois-Chateaux d'Eguisheim"; in the sky are stars, and Saturn
