Title | Letter from [William Spottiswoode], President of the Royal Society, Burlington House, to the Right Hon [Sir William Harcourt], Secretary of State for the Home Department |
Creator | Spottiswoode; William (1825-1883); British mathematician; publisher; treasurer and president of the Royal Society |
Date | 19 June 1880 |
Description | Regarding the Crown's law officers' decision to classify the Royal Society as lying within the operation of the Charitable Trusts Act and thus within the jurisdiction of the Charity Commissions. The Society's Council does not agree with the decision and asks for bills to be introduced that would place the Society on the same level as universities and colleges, which are exempted from the Act.
