TitleLetter from [John Young] Buchanan, to Professor [Joseph] Larmor, Secretary of the Royal Society
CreatorRiddell; Charles James Buchanan (1817-1903); British army officer and geophysicist
Date19 March 1904
DescriptionAcknowledges receipt of Larmor's letter dated the 12th, and a copy of remarks on his paper on the compressibility of solids, by a referee. Buchanan recalls his conversation with Larmor a little 'differently' to Larmor, in that Larmor remarked that his paper was of interest to engineers, which he agreed with, 'although the paper itself has nothing to do with engineering'. The paper had already been subject to reference and read at the ordinary meeting, therefore causing Buchanan confusion on the further reference. He also discusses Larmor's comments that he knows Buchanan's 'views about criticism of the work offered by competent authorities'. Buchanan remarks he has always welcomed 'legitimate crticism'.
