TitleLetter from [Ernest Francis] Bashford, Cancer Research Fund, Examination Hall, Victoria Embankment, London, to [Robert William Frederick] Harrison
CreatorBashford; Ernest Francis (1873-1923)
Date2 February 1904
DescriptionAcknowledges Harrison's letter [NLB/28/221] and his 'dismay' at seeing Bashford's paper in the British Medical Journal, but remarks 'it cannot have been greater than mine was', as Mr White had informed him that that the journals had been asked not to publish last week, and Bashford himself had not provided no journal with a copy of his paper, and had not received an advance proof either. Bashford is 'aggreieved' at the extent which journalists have exploited 'our paper', and argues it would be a 'misfortune' if the paper is excluded from the Proceedings of the Royal Society.

Enclosed is a typescript letter from the Assistant Editor of the British Medical Journal, to Robert [William Frederick] Harrison, dated 2 February 1904 consisting of one page. The Editor remarks on [Bashford's] paper and informs a proof of it was obtained from a person who was present at a meeting of the Royal Society, and openly took it from a table where there were several copies, and there was no 'hindrance' to this. They decline to disclose the name of the person. Refers to a phone call which stated there was no objection on publication of the paper but to wait until a 'authorized copy had been received'. Once a proof was submitted with corrections from the author it was thought to be 'justified in regarding as an authorized copy'.
